What Is It?

The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive is the latest diesel model to join BMW's lineup. It offers jack-of-all-trades capabilities by combining BMW's full-size 7 Series luxury sedan with a fuel-efficient diesel engine and standard all-wheel drive.

The 740Ld xDrive's most important feature is under the hood, where it houses a 3.0-liter turbodiesel 6-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower and an impressive 413 lb-ft of torque. While that engine won't be an acceleration leader -- BMW says it has a 0-to-60 time of 6.1 seconds -- the powertrain will return excellent gas mileage. Official numbers haven't been released, but we'd expect numbers in the low-to-mid 20s for miles per gallon in the city, with highway figures above 30 mpg.

Beyond its excellent gas mileage, the 740Ld xDrive also includes standard all-wheel drive, a huge benefit to shoppers in cold climates that see a lot of snow and other bad weather. The model is also based on BMW's long-wheelbase 7 Series, which adds extra legroom for rear-seat passengers.

How Much?

The 740Ld xDrive starts at $83,425 with shipping.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive is truly a jack-of-all-trades for luxury car shoppers. Not only does it offer an extended-wheelbase, full-size luxury sedan body style for optimal luxury, the 740Ld xDrive also boasts excellent gas mileage thanks to its diesel power. Standard all-wheel drive is icing on the cake for drivers in cold-weather climates.

Other Cars to Consider

Audi A8 3.0 TDI -- On paper, Audi's diesel-powered A8 is highly similar to the 740Ld xDrive thanks to its 240-hp turbodiesel V6 and standard all-wheel drive. Pricing is similar too, with figures starting around $83,500. But we're eager to see if BMW can match Audi's fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

Mercedes S350 BlueTEC -- Mercedes has redesigned its S-Class for 2014, and the latest model doesn't yet offer a diesel variant. But the outgoing S-Class boasted the S350 BlueTEC, which featured 240 hp, standard all-wheel drive and up to 31 mpg in highway driving.

Used Lexus LS 600h -- If it's fuel economy and performance you're after, consider Lexus' high-end LS 600h sedan. While 19 mpg city and 23 mpg highway won't touch the BMW's figures, the LS 600h boasts a muscular 389 hp. But pricing starts around $121,000, which means a used model might be better for shoppers looking for a more affordable base price.
