Chevrolet will reveal an all-new 2014 Impala at this year's New York International Auto Show, starting next week. The automaker announced the upcoming debut by revealing a teaser photo that previews the Impala's redesigned exterior.

The teaser photo shows a portion of the updated Impala's so-called "C-pillar," the area behind the rear side window where the roofline meets the trunk. In the photo, the vehicle can be seen wearing the familiar Impala emblem and a deep shade of blue, while the window line appears extended further back than the current model. Chrome trim surrounds the windows, while a roof-mounted "shark fin" antenna suggests an available navigation system - a first for the Impala.

While the teaser photo shows only a small portion of the Impala's exterior, the sedan is expected to include more contemporary styling and possibly be bigger than today's model. The 2014 Impala is also anticipated to be far more competitive than today's version, which is primarily sold to fleet operators like rental car companies and government agencies.

Although Chevrolet hasn't announced any further details about the upcoming 2014 Impala, the automaker did reveal that the new sedan would serve as the basis for its upcoming NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar, which launches in 2013. Despite the new Impala's spring 2012 unveiling, Chevrolet says it won't begin arriving in dealerships until early next year, which explains the designation as a 2014 model.

This year's New York International Auto Show will be a busy event for Chevrolet. In addition to revealing the all-new Impala, the automaker says it will also show off a revised version of its popular midsize Traverse SUV, which will include the brand's innovative new center-mounted airbag for improved side impact protection. Chevrolet will also display several concept cars in New York, including the sporty Code 130R and Tru 140S, which were revealed earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show.

What it means to you: The Impala could be a contender again once the all-new model arrives.
