2014 Consumer Electronics Show Spotlights Automaker Advancements

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has always been one of the most anticipated new-product showcases in the world. And nowadays, the gadgets are bigger, as automakers such as GM become more involved. The idea is to show off smart, new technologies designed specifically for the car and intended to keep customers connected while on the go.

One of the biggest announcements at CES was the integration of 4G LTE technology for the car. Adding this technology allows automakers such as GM to enable a Wi-Fi hot spot within the vehicle. With this advancement, a car can now offer a high-speed connection. So when passengers bring in devices such as a tablet or a smartphone, they can connect quickly and efficiently. The system can even work with multiple devices simultaneously.

All of that is great for the devices you bring into the car, but what about new gadgets for the car itself? To that end, Chevrolet has announced a cool, new performance technology feature for the 2015 Corvette called the Corvette Performance Data Recorder. This system has a camera in the front of the car that collects driving footage and puts it on an SD card, along with g-force, braking and acceleration data. From there, the driver can review and analyze his or her driving patterns. Ultimately, it is intended to improve piloting skills.

And that’s a quick glimpse of how the auto industry is showing itself this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. While all this new technology isn’t going to shorten your commute, it might just make it a lot more enjoyable.
