What Is It?
The 2014 Toyota Aygo is an all-new subcompact hatchback sold in Europe and Asia. In those markets, it’s one of Toyota’s smallest cars, slotting even below the tiny Yaris. In fact, the only smaller Toyota is the brand’s iQ city car, which is sold in the U.S. as the Scion iQ.
Unfortunately for drivers who enjoy small cars, the Aygo is unlikely to join the iQ in Toyota’s U.S. lineup. But foreign shoppers will appreciate the hatchback’s new styling, which includes a bold grille, sharp lines and a front end that’s surprisingly aggressive for a subcompact city car. Most of the Aygo’s look is shared with the Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1, which were co-developed with Toyota.
Under the Aygo’s hood, you’ll find only one engine choice: a 1.0-liter 4-cylinder that makes just 68 horsepower and 70 lb-ft of torque. While fuel economy tops out at a stellar 55-plus miles per gallon, the Aygo’s small engine means 0-to-60 takes a lethargic 14 seconds — probably much of the reason why Toyota doesn’t offer the Aygo in the States.
Depending on the market, the Aygo is expected to start at around $14,000 in Europe.
When Can You Get It?
While the Aygo won’t come to America, shoppers in Europe can get it sometime in the next few months.
Add It to Your Shopping List Because…
Although Americans can’t add it to their shopping lists, the 2014 Toyota Aygo is an excellent look at what to expect from Toyota models in the future. While a 70-hp subcompact doesn’t have to be exciting, Toyota has taken a few steps, especially on the outside, to ensure that the Aygo stands out from the pack. We wouldn’t be surprised to see the brand make a similar effort once it comes time to redesign the U.S.-bound Yaris in the next few years.
Other Cars to Consider
FIAT 500 — Though you can’t get an Aygo, the subcompact FIAT 500 is an excellent second choice. It too boasts unique styling and excellent fuel economy, though the 500’s acceleration dramatically outshines the Aygo’s.
Ford Fiesta — Like the Aygo, the subcompact Ford Fiesta offers four doors and a bold look. Unlike the Aygo, it offers a peppy engine, and there’s even a performance version for drivers interested in sporty acceleration.
Honda Fit — The subcompact Honda Fit doesn’t boast the same exciting look as the Aygo, but it does include many of the features that you’d want in a subcompact. In the Fit’s case, that means a roomy interior, clever seating and excellent gas mileage.
Used Ford Focus — Rather than choosing a new subcompact, you might want to consider a used compact like the Ford Focus. You’ll get more interior room, and if you buy one that’s only a few years old, you’ll have a lot of factory warranty left over.
