2015 Chevrolet City Express: Chicago Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2015 Chevrolet City Express is a compact cargo van aimed at urban businesses that value efficiency and maneuverability over all-out size. Based on the Nissan NV200, the City Express will be Chevrolet’s second cargo van, playing little brother to the brand’s full-size Express.

Under the hood, the City Express offers a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a CVT automatic transmission. While its 131 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque may not seem especially potent, the benefit here is fuel economy: With the same engine and transmission, Nissan’s NV200 returns 24 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg highway. That’s far better than the full-size Express model’s 13 mpg city and 17 mpg hwy.

But the City Express offers more than excellent gas mileage. It also boasts a compact 36.7-foot turning circle, which makes it perfect for city driving. And the van’s cargo area of 122.7 cu ft is more than enough for many businesses to transport their tools, products or other goods.

How Much?

While Chevrolet hasn’t announced pricing for the City Express, the highly similar Nissan NV200 starts at just under $21,000 with shipping.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

If you run a business and you’re searching for a good cargo van, you might be disappointed by just how large — and inefficient — most choices are. The 2015 Chevrolet City Express comes from a new school of cargo vans that emphasizes efficiency and maneuverability over enormity and cargo capacity. No, it won’t carry as much as a full-size Express or a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, but it’s a good compromise for drivers who need a van that’s good for city use.

Other Cars to Consider

Ford Transit Connect With its 4-cylinder engine and small footprint, the newly redesigned Ford Transit Connect is a lot like the City Express. The Ford offers a passenger model and better highway fuel economy, but the Chevrolet likely boasts the edge in terms of pricing.

Nissan NV200 If you’re going to consider a City Express, it only makes sense to check out the NV200, its thinly disguised twin. You’ll find the same powerplant and similar features, so the biggest difference may come down to which one is offered with the best deal.

RAM C/V Tradesman The RAM C/V Tradesman is essentially a cargo version of the Dodge Grand Caravan. The C/V’s fuel economy isn’t as good as that of the City Express, and it’s not as compact, but the C/V boasts reasonable pricing and more interior room than the City Express.
