2015 Chevrolet Colorado: LA Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado is an all-new midsize pickup truck, sized to rival the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. Drivers can choose among three body styles. Base-level Colorado pickups will include an extended cab and a 6-foot bed, while 4-door crew cab models offer two bed lengths -- a standard 5-foot bed or an optional 6-footer.

Styling is completely new compared to the previous Colorado, which was offered through the 2012 model year. It's more rounded, more modern and larger than the outgoing truck, and it now comes closer to the Chevrolet Colorado pickup found in overseas markets. The cabin is also vastly improved, with upgraded materials and a stylish center stack that offers room for Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system.

The Colorado also sees big changes under the hood. Standard is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, which is expected to produce around 200 horsepower. A 3.6-liter V6 that makes around 300 hp is optional. But the biggest news is what's on the horizon, as Chevrolet plans to offer the Colorado with a 2.8-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel. That would be unique among midsize trucks.

How Much?

Chevrolet hasn't said for sure, but we'd expect the base-level Colorado to start around $20,000.

When Can You Get It?

The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado is the first new life breathed into the midsize pickup segment in years. Most rivals, such as the Ford Ranger and Dodge Dakota, have been canceled, while the Tacoma and Frontier are getting long in the tooth. The Colorado, meanwhile, will offer advanced engines, up-to-date styling, a handsome interior and the latest gadgets. And if it's anything like the newly redesigned Silverado, we expect a best-in-class driving experience.

Other Cars to Consider

Nissan Frontier -- The Frontier is a robust, powerful midsize truck with a standard V6. Like the Colorado, it only comes in extended-cab or crew-cab configurations. Unlike the Colorado, it's available now.

Toyota Tacoma -- The Tacoma has a reputation for durability, toughness and reliability that the Colorado will find hard to match. Otherwise, the Colorado seems to have the Tacoma squarely in its sights.

Used Chevrolet Silverado-- If you need a truck but you're not sure whether the Colorado is big enough to fit your lifestyle, consider the larger Silverado. It's more expensive, but buying a used one will help it fit into a more affordable price range.

Used Ford F-150 -- Of course, you don't have to stick with Chevy. The highly popular Ford F-150 also makes a great used deal for buyers who need a little more space than the Colorado provides.
