2015 Galpin Auto Sports Ford Mustang: SEMA Show

What Is It?

The 2015 Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) Ford Mustang is one of the most outlandish performance cars at the 2014 SEMA Show, and we mean that as a compliment. Based in Van Nuys, California, a northern suburb of Los Angeles, GAS identifies as "the tuning arm of the largest Ford dealer in the United States," and they're celebrating the 2015 Ford Mustang's debut by stuffing a preposterous 725 horsepower under the hood.

How did they do it? All it took was a Whipple supercharger bolted onto the Mustang GT's standard 5.0-liter V8, which makes a mere 435 hp by default. That's the same basic formula employed by the supercharged 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, except the Dodge tops out at 707 horses. Since the GAS Ford Mustang weighs hundreds of pounds less, its performance is likely to be measurably better. The Hellcat goes a quarter of a mile in a certified 11.2 seconds at 125 miles per hour, so we're thinking the GAS Mustang should easily break into the mid-to-high 10s at 130 mph or more.

In other words, this is probably one of the fastest street-legal cars on the planet.

This is SEMA, of course, so the Galpin folks have given due attention to their Mustang's looks as well. With an eye to the Mustang's golden 50th anniversary for 2015, the 20-inch wheels, side sills, brake calipers and badges are all finished in gold. So is the supercharger, incidentally, and there's a handy glass window in the middle of the hood for easier ogling. The black paint has metallic gold flecks, and there is also a restyled front fascia with carbon-fiber accents, bespoke headlights with sequential front LED turn signals (matching the Mustang's trademark sequential rear signals) and a more aggressive rear diffuser.

Other GAS Mustang highlights include a sport-tuned suspension by Steeda and a free-breathing exhaust system by Magnaflow. Inside, there's additional gold trim to liven things up a bit, and the Recaro bucket seats are finished in -- you guessed it -- black and gold fabric.

How Much?

GAS has a feature on their website that answers this very question on an individual basis. You can specify which elements of the 2015 GAS Mustang you'd like to have installed on your own Mustang, and GAS will be glad to provide you with a custom quote.

When Can You Get It?

We expect the supercharger and other accessories to be officially available in early 2015.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

The GAS Mustang is stupendously fast, and it's also based on the most civilized muscle car ever. This car isn't just about the power. It's also a great all-around driver, with killer looks to boot.

Other Cars to Consider

Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat -- Depending on how ambitious Galpin gets with its pricing, the $60,000-plus Hellcat could be a bargain. But if Galpin goes low with that supercharger as a standalone option, the Hellcat could be in trouble.

Ford Mustang GT -- Hey, we had to say it. The regular 435-hp Mustang GT is a phenomenal all-around car, and it might have a handling edge over the GAS Mustang, too, since it doesn't have a weight-inflating supercharger on top of its V8.

Used Chevrolet Corvette Stingray -- C7 Stingrays are starting to trickle into dealerships as certified pre-owned options, and even compared to a 725-hp Mustang, the current Corvette is pretty darn desirable.
