2015 Nissan Versa Note SR: Chicago Auto Show

What Is It?

The Nissan Versa Note is a subcompact 5-door hatchback that's consistently ranked among the least expensive cars on the market. Meanwhile, the 2015 Nissan Versa Note SR is a new trim level that attempts to spice things up a bit with some sporty touches inside and out.

On the outside, changes to the Versa Note SR are immediately noticeable. There's a new 16-inch alloy wheel design, a rear roof spoiler and side sills that give the car a lowered appearance. There's also a new front fascia with standard fog lights and chrome accents.

Inside, the Versa Note SR boasts 370Z-inspired sporty design cues, such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, piano-black trim on the center stack and suedelike seat centers with orange accents. The SR also includes all the standard equipment from the Versa Note SL, which means there's a 5-in touchscreen, a reversing camera, Bluetooth and push-button starting.

Under the hood, the Versa Note SR doesn't include any changes from the standard model. That means it still uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder that makes just 109 horsepower. While that may not be quite what you'd expect from a sport trim level, the small engine has a benefit: Versa Note SR still returns the same 40 miles per gallon highway as other Versa Note models.

How Much?

Nissan hasn't announced pricing, but we'd expect the Versa Note SR to start around $20,000 with shipping.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

If you want a small car with lots of equipment, the 2015 Nissan Versa Note SR is your pick. Not only does it include a long list of standard equipment, it also boasts a sporty look that you don't often find in the subcompact car segment. No, there isn't any power boost under the hood, but the Versa Note SR still offers the same excellent fuel economy other Versa models do.

Other Cars to Consider

Chevrolet Sonic -- The 5-door Sonic RS hatchback is probably the Versa Note SR's closest rival. Like the Versa, it offers lots of equipment and a sporty look without the fuel economy hit of additional power.

Ford Fiesta -- The Fiesta offers a practical 5-door hatchback body style and excellent fuel economy. There's also a sporty ST model that boasts more than just sporty styling thanks to a 197-hp turbocharged engine.

Kia Soul -- The recently updated Kia Soul offers more power and a larger interior than the Versa for only a little more money. The interior is a little nicer, too. But fuel economy numbers can't match the Versa's, and there's no sporty version to rival the SR.
