2016 Cadillac CTS-V: Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?

The Cadillac CTS-V is a high-performance sport sedan that's now entering its third generation. While earlier models were certainly impressive, the latest CTS-V packs even more punch, along with more luxury.

On the outside, the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V looks exactly as you'd expect. There's an aggressive rear diffuser, huge quad exhausts, a large rear spoiler and a bold front end with an enlarged hood bulge to cover the car's enormous engine. The CTS-V also boasts an exciting interior with Alcantara accents, contrast stitching and grippy sport seats designed to keep occupants in place during hard cornering.

The CTS-V especially shines when you examine its mechanical details. Under the hood, there's a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that pumps out 640 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque, a huge increase from the outgoing model's already amazing 556 hp and 551 lb-ft. Cadillac says 0-to-60 comes in just 3.7 seconds thanks to a standard 8-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. And the CTS-V boasts several other upgrades over the standard CTS, including improved steering, bigger brakes and GM's impressive Magnetic Ride Control System.

How Much?

We expect a pretty big bump, around $5,000 or so, from the outgoing model's $70,000 base price.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Cadillac is improving its stature in the high-performance world, and the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V seems to be leading the charge. Power tops all rivals, from the BMW M5 to the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, and handling is on par with those models, too. Although many drivers, including CTS-V owners, didn't think Cadillac could top the outgoing model, the all-new 2016 version seems to prove otherwise.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Audi S6 -- Though the S6 only offers 420 hp when compared to the CTS-V, it boasts a handsome design, standard all-wheel drive, and traditional Audi interior quality. It's worth a look if horsepower isn't your main concern.

Lexus GS F -- The newly announced Lexus GS F (revealed at the Detroit Auto Show) touts 467 hp and some serious improvements over the standard model. Like the S6, it's worth a look if your primary focus isn't horsepower.

Used BMW M5 -- The M5 doesn't quite offer as much power as the CTS-V, but its handling prowess is second to none. With a $94,000 MSRP, however, it might be better to consider a used model rather than a brand-new one.

Used Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG -- With a starting price of around $94,000 with shipping, the Mercedes E63 AMG is a lot more expensive than the CTS-V. But it boasts standard all-wheel drive and the traditional German car-performance sedan image. As a result, a used one is worth a look.
