2016 Jaguar XF: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2016 Jaguar XF is ready to shake up the midsize-executive-sedan scene. It's an area where German manufacturers have had a stranglehold, but this British car has the looks, talent and muscle to break that grip.

At its heart is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6. One version makes 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, while another develops 380 hp and the same 332 lb-ft. With either engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission sends drive to the rear wheels, or there's an optional all-wheel-drive system.

The body uses aluminum extensively to achieve a lighter weight than the outgoing model, which has benefits in both performance and fuel consumption. Even the suspension has some aluminum parts.

The brains are full of driving technology features such as laser head-up display, traffic-sign recognition, semi-automated parking, autonomous emergency braking, a reconfigurable 12.3-inch thin-film-transistor instrument cluster, adaptive suspension and adaptive cruise control.

The 2016 Jaguar XF is completely new for this model year and moves into its second generation.

How Much?

To be announced. The current range starts at $51,100, including $925 for destination.

When Can You Get It?

Winter 2015.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Everyone else has a BMW or a Mercedes-Benz. Of course, they can't all be wrong, but perhaps they're lacking in imagination. There's a particular pleasure to be had when driving a Jaguar. It doesn't try to overemphasize how efficient and clever it is.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Audi A6 -- The A6 is understated but still elegant inside and out.

2015 BMW 5 Series -- The 5 Series is supremely capable. It's a pillar of the class and rightfully so.

2015 Lexus GS -- The GS is well built, generously equipped and offers a tidy driving experience, but it's just lacking that must-have appeal.

2015 Mercedes-Benz E-Class -- The E-Class is close to perfection: tech-rich and plenty of comfort and convenience features.

Used Maserati Quattroporte -- Chances are that someone considering a Jaguar may not be swayed by the whole German dominance of this class. The Quattroporte has a Ferrari-sourced V8 engine, plus tons of Italian style.

Used Porsche Panamera -- The idea of a midsize Porsche sedan mixing with the 5 Series crowd is intriguing. Until such a car comes along, there's always the next size up. The Panamera is still sporty and features a beautiful interior.
