The 2016 Kia Optima was officially unveiled at this year's New York Auto Show with some big updates over last year's model, though we're happy to see that the sedan's handsome profile remains largely untouched.

On the outside, the Optima grows in just about every dimension compared to its predecessor, but it retains the sharp look we came to love from the outgoing model. Changes are more thorough on the inside, where the Optima boasts a revised center stack, a new steering wheel and a host of improved materials.

Under the hood, the Optima joins its Sonata sibling, redesigned last year, by offering a new 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. It's the most frugal engine in the lineup, and it'll make 178 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque while likely yielding nearly 40 miles per gallon. Last year's other powerplants, a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, carry over, though the turbocharged engine loses some power in an apparent effort to boost gas mileage. Although a new Optima Hybrid has not yet been announced, we suspect it'll receive the full redesign sometime next year.

Look for the 2016 Kia Optima to reach dealers later this year, with pricing expected to be largely similar to the current model.
