What Is It?

The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a fully redesigned, fourth-generation version of Mazda's iconic MX-5 Miata sports car. Revealed last month at a special event in California, the MX-5 Miata makes its European debut in Paris, where Mazda has announced several new details about the compact roadster.

On the outside, the MX-5 Miata offers dramatic styling changes that give it a totally new look compared to last year's model. There are new headlights and taillights, for instance, along with a completely new profile, a new grille and a revised overall shape.

Inside, the MX-5 Miata is also substantially updated, boasting a higher-quality interior than the outgoing model. The latest model also adds a center-mounted screen -- a first for the compact roadster -- along with available leather seats and luxurious contrast stitching. Despite all the new equipment, Mazda says that the new MX-5 has shed an impressive 200 pounds compared to last year's model, which likely means that its new curb weight is close to 2,200 pounds.

Although Mazda hadn't previously announced engine specs, the automaker confirmed in Paris that U.S. versions of the 2016 MX-5 will use a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV 4-cylinder. Although that's the same engine that makes 155 horsepower in the base-level Mazda3, the automaker says it will feature unique tuning for the Miata -- and possibly some additional power.

How Much?

Although Mazda hasn't announced pricing, we expect a similar base price to today's MX-5 Miata, which starts around $24,400 with shipping.

When Can You Get It?

Thanks to its lightweight chassis and rear-wheel-drive layout, the MX-5 Miata has always been one of the most enjoyable cars on the road, and the new model seems to improve on the roadster's legendary status. Boasting a better interior, totally new styling and a lighter curb weight, we think that the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata is likely to be one of the best Miata models yet, though we're excited to get behind the wheel and find out for sure.

Other Cars to Consider

MINI Cooper -- If you're looking for a fun, sporty car, the MINI Cooper has you covered -- no matter your tastes. There's a hatchback, a 4-seat convertible, a 2-seat convertible and a coupe, and each boasts a highly enjoyable driving experience.

Scion FR-S -- While it's not a convertible, the rear-wheel-drive Scion FR-S is an impressive sporty car thanks to a well-balanced chassis, a wide track and strong acceleration. Pricing is also comparable to the Miata's, starting at around $25,400 with shipping.

Volkswagen GTI -- Also not offered as a convertible, the GTI otherwise boasts a lot of what makes the Miata fun (specifically, excellent handling and strong acceleration) in a more practical package. Pricing starts around $26,000 with shipping.

Used Mazda MX-5 Miata -- Although the new Miata packs an impressive punch, shoppers interested in the 2-seat roadster should probably check out pre-owned versions of the outgoing model. They'll be cheaper than the new MX-5 Miata, of course, and they'll offer much of the same impressive driving experience.
