What Is It?

The 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 is the swankiest, most spacious, luxurious S-Class you can get. When Mercedes-Benz retired the Maybach marque a couple of years ago, most people thought the name would be consigned to history. But Mercedes has resurrected the emblem and is now using Maybach as a sub-brand to represent the ultimate version of its flagship sedan.

Even a regular S-Class is an impressive machine, from its safety tech to its rear-seat massage function. Now multiply that by several degrees -- and start with rear-passenger space, because this car is all about the passengers in the back.

The body has been stretched to allow reclining rear seats. Much of the cabin is hand-built and hand-stitched. There's wood, chrome, leather, ambient lighting, fragranced air conditioning, champagne flutes, surround-sound entertainment, aircraft-style tables with leather writing inserts and many ways to personalize the interior.

Mercedes says this is the quietest production sedan in the world. There's sound insulation even around the seat belt reels. The smallest of details go into this grandest of vehicles.

It also gets the biggest of engines: a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 thrumming with 523 horsepower and creating 612 lb-ft of torque, bringing an S600 badge to the tail of an S-Class once again. Meanwhile, the chauffeur gets a helping hand from many driver assistance features.

How Much?

This kind of car is much more than a conveyance -- it's an experience, and experience is priceless. But yes, the 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 is going to be expensive.

When Can You Get It?

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

You might be looking for that ultimate luxury car. Or, if have other luxury cars, this will complete the set.

Other Cars to Consider

Bentley Mulsanne -- So wonderful and powerful that you'll want to drive it all the time.

Rolls-Royce Phantom -- No one does luxury like the British, even if Rolls Royce is owned by BMW. This and the Bentley (owned by Volkswagen) could also attract lots of attention.

BMW 7 Series High Security -- More business-like than the others, thanks to its armor plating.

Used Maybach 57 or 62 -- Probably a relative bargain these days. The only downside might be that someone with less cultured taste customized the cabin.
