2016 Mitsubishi Outlander: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

Although the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander rides on the same platform as its predecessor, with the same 105.1-inch wheelbase, that's about the only thing Mitsubishi hasn't changed. Well, alright, the engines carry over, too: a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder (166 horsepower, 162 lb-ft of torque) with a continuously variable automatic and a 3.0-liter V6 (224 hp, 215 lb-ft) with a 6-speed automatic and shift paddles. Otherwise, though, the Outlander gets completely overhauled styling inside and out, along with improved refinement, and it's all on display at the 2015 New York Auto Show. We wouldn't call it a full redesign, but it should nonetheless breathe some life into Mitsubishi's aging lineup.

Standard features are plentiful in the 2016 Outlander, including 18-in alloy wheels, LED lighting accents, heated mirrors, automatic climate control, FUSE voice controls, a color trip computer and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. You don't get that kind of stuff in most affordable crossovers unless you pay extra. Seven airbags help keep you safe in emergencies, and cutting-edge safety features such as lane-departure warning and a collision-mitigation system with automatic braking are available. On the road, Mitsubishi says you'll notice better handling and significantly lower noise levels, giving the 2016 Outlander a more luxurious vibe.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Mazda CX-5 -- The stylish CX-5 boasts excellent fuel economy and a roomy interior.

2015 Ford Escape -- It's no spring chicken, but the Escape has stayed fresh with excellent electronics (including the envelope-pushing MyFord Touch system) and sporty handling.

2015 Toyota RAV4 -- The RAV4 is a best seller for good reason, offering a spacious cabin, peppy performance and excellent resale value.

Used BMW X3 -- Believe it or not, you can get a luxurious X3 via BMW's certified pre-owned program for the price of a well-equipped Outlander.
