2016 New York Auto Show: Preview

Just because the 2016 New York Auto Show signals the end of the whole car show circus until the fall, don’t think it’s a lame-duck event. The reverse is true. The New York show has become a highlight of the calendar, with many manufacturers seeing this as their last chance to make big headlines before everything gets back to business as usual.

It looks like this year will not disappoint, as there are several world debuts being planned. Right now, things are still fluid; more announcements will be made nearer the time and, of course, at the show, but here’s some information and a little speculation to be getting on with.

Hello, World

It’s a global debut for the 2017 Acura MDX. What makes this midsize premium crossover SUV (with seating for up to seven) different from the 2016 model is that time-honored tradition, the mid-generation revamp.

Likewise, the 2017 Buick Encore subcompact crossover unveils its refreshed looks. We saw the update of the regular Kia Forte compact car in Detroit this past January. Now it’s the turn of the 2-door version, the 2017 Kia Forte Koup.

This is big. The world debut of the 2017 Mercedes-AMG E43, a high-performance version of a giant among midsize premium sedans, with 396 horsepower from its twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6. A whole new generation of E-Class kicks in for the 2017 model year, so this is just one treat among many to come. And it looks like there’s an even more muscular E63 on the horizon.

Something is going to happen with the Mazda MX-5 Miata — possibly a coupe version with a fixed hard top or maybe a roadster with a folding hard top. Mitsubishi also has a vehicle under wraps — an all-new car, perhaps — but the company is keeping its cards close to its metallic chest until show time.

The 2017 Porsche Macan premium compact crossover hasn’t been refreshed, but a quick look under the hood reveals a new turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. This powers a new base model for the range, expected to be priced in the high $40K. That’s cheaper than the Boxster, making it the least expensive new Porsche on the market when it goes on sale in July.

When the 2017 Subaru Impreza is introduced in New York, it will signal the next generation of this compact sedan and hatchback based on an all-new platform. There was a concept at the 2015 Los Angeles auto show, but this is the production model. All-wheel drive will still be standard, and there’s a plug-in hybrid version in the works as well as a sportier WRX model.

This is only a gut feeling rather than a fact, but don’t be surprised if the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 makes an appearance. This is an ultra-hot, track-ready version of the excellent sixth-generation Camaro coupe, with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 making a magnificent 640 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque, which really is more than enough power for anyone.

Hello, North America

This will be the first chance we’ll get to see the 2017 Honda Civic hatchback on American soil, along with the awesome 2017 BMW M760i xDrive and its sister car, the 2017 Alpina B7 xDrive. Naturally, every manufacturer attending (which is most of them) will have as many cars as their show stands can accommodate, so visitors can truly get a feel for what their next vehicle purchase might be.

Press days for the 2016 New York Auto Show are March 23 and 24. It’s open to the public from March 25 to April 3. As always, Autotrader will be delivering full coverage, so check back frequently for particulars, prices, pics and perspectives.
