2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia is a compact executive sedan set to rival the likes of the BMW 3 Series. We saw the high-performance version, the 505-horsepower Quadrifoglio (4-leaf clover), at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show, where it was one of the highlights. Now, here at the 2016 Geneva show, the rest of the range has debuted.

Engine choices begin with a 150-hp turbodiesel 4-cylinder and go up to a 200-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder before hitting the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 of the Quadrifoglio. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends drive to the rear wheels (standard) or all four (optional). We're also looking at an active suspension, advanced safety features and several tech toys that are now obligatory is this car class, but what we should really be looking at is the looks.

It has to be said that Alfa Romeo is still an unknown quantity in the United States. The 4C sports car (the only car available since Alfa Romeo returned to the North American market) has its lovers, but it also has its detractors. Whatever brave buyer goes for one of the first non-Quadrifoglio Giulia models might well be swayed by the styling. And there is something about Alfa Romeo styling that just hits all the right buttons, subjectively speaking.

How Much?

The 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio starts at $70,000. That's about $5,000 more than the 2016 BMW M3. The regular 3 Series starts at around $34,000, so expect the Giulia equivalent to do something similar.

When Can You Get It?

Mid 2016 for the Quadrifoglio. As for the rest of the range: to be announced.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 BMW 3 Series -- This is still the benchmark of smaller executive sedans. Its driver-focused attitude should have the same (or even more) appeal as a Giulia.

2016 Cadillac ATS -- The ATS is totally up to the demanding task of going fender-to-fender with the best.

2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class -- The C-Class takes you further down the luxury path; it's one of the best-selling cars to wear the 3-pointed star.

2016 Jaguar XE -- The XE is a completely new model that's also hoping to be a big fish in this tough pond. It offers lots of aluminum, supercharged power and inimitable style.

2016 Lexus IS -- The IS is dependable, well equipped and now showing a little individuality with that massive grille.

2017 Audi A4 -- There's a brand-new generation of the A4 coming for 2017, and we all know it's going to be impressive.

Used Audi A6 -- Someone considering an Alfa Romeo probably has styling quite high on their list of desirable traits. The handsome A6 displays a range of qualities that's both deep and wide.
