What Is It?

The 2017 Audi A4 is a fully redesigned version of Audi's highly popular A4 sedan. The brand also used the Frankfurt Auto Show to reveal its all-new high-performance S4, which offers additional power and other impressive benefits.

On the outside, you'll be forgiven for thinking that the 2017 A4 looks the same as the current model. Changes are subtle, but they're there, including new lights, refined creases and sharper angles. Bigger changes have come to the interior, where the sedan boasts a totally overhauled center control stack, improved cabin materials, a revised dashboard, a newly available thin-film-transistor gauge-cluster display and unique full-width air vents that span much of the dashboard. It's the same story with the S4, which also gets a new interior and small -- but noticeable -- exterior updates.

Under the hood, both the A4 and S4 offer major changes compared to the current models. The A4 adds a new 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine, for example, while also offering a revised 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that boasts a horsepower increase from last year's 220 horses to a new 252 hp. A low-power version of that engine may also reach the A4's U.S. lineup to compete with the entry-level BMW 320i. As usual, front-wheel drive is standard, while Audi's quattro all-wheel drive will be optional.

Meanwhile, the S4 also gains power thanks to a revised 3.0-liter supercharged V6, which now boasts 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque -- an increase of more than 20 hp and 40 lb-ft over last year's model.

Although Audi hasn't announced much in terms of equipment, we know the A4 and S4 will boast a few changes there, too. One is a newly standard dual-clutch automatic transmission in the A4, which will be a welcome departure from last year's standard continuously variable automatic and optional 8-speed automatic. The S4 will reportedly still use the 8-speed. We expect that the A4 and S4 will also offer many other modern revisions such as forward-collision alert, LED headlights and more.

How Much?

Although Audi hasn't announced final pricing, we wouldn't expect a substantial increase over today's base figures of around $36,900 for the A4 and $50,200 for the S4.

The 2017 Audi A4 looks to reemerge as a top contender in the luxury-sport-sedan segment. Although today's model uses a dated design and dull powertrains, the new version offers more equipment, more power, a sharper interior and a revised look that gives it a more modern appearance. Even if it's been a while since you've considered the A4 -- and the sporty S4 -- the new model might be worth a second look.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 BMW 3 Series -- Consistently one of the A4's top competitors, the 3 Series usually offers a more potent driving experience. It also touts more variety, as there's a wagon, a hatchback, and coupe and convertible models badged as the 4 Series.

2015 Infiniti Q50 -- The Infiniti Q50 is among the bargains of the class, offering Audi S4 power at A4 pricing. It's loaded with technology, too. But the Q50's driving experience rarely matches that of its European rivals.

2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class -- We like the new C-Class, from its handsome new exterior look to its plush cabin, but it's among the most expensive cars in this segment.

Used BMW 5 Series -- Drivers who want a little more room and power may want to check out BMW's 5 Series, as it combines a larger interior with a wide range of trims, engine options and equipment. Prices are higher, though, so you may want to consider a used model.
