2017 Audi Q2 and 2017 Audi RS Q3: Geneva Auto Show

What Are They?

The 2017 Audi Q2 and 2017 Audi RS Q3 both signal fresh developments in small-crossover culture. The Q2 is the newest member of Audi's Q family; it's also the littlest. Based on the A3/VW Golf compact-car platform, it's about 7.5 inches shorter than the Q3, which is currently the smallest Q on sale in the United States. It still offers a useful 37.1 cu ft. of cargo space, though.

Propulsion comes from a choice of turbocharged 4-cylinder engines ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 liters, with power output spanning 116 to 190 horsepower. Audi has also hinted at a possible plug-in hybrid version. Front-wheel drive is the standard setup, although all-wheel drive is on the options list.

Because it comes from a premium marque, the 2017 Audi Q2 will enjoy many high-tech features usually found in larger classes, both in terms of convenience and safety, such as a version of the Audi virtual cockpit high-resolution instrument display and a self-parking function. What we don't know yet is whether Audi will sell it in the United States. Of course, there's a big market for crossovers all over the world, but America is still grappling with the notion of both small and premium within the same vehicle.

Audi doesn't usually bring over its hot RS models, either, so we shouldn't hold out too much hope of ever getting to grips with the 2017 Audi RS Q3. This is a shame, because a turbocharged 5-cylinder engine pushing 362 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque through a sport-tuned all-wheel-drive system seems like a lot of fun.

How Much?

To be announced. It's academic, though, since neither model is set to go on sale in the United States right now.

When Can You Get Them?

When you move to Europe later this year.

Add Them to Your Shopping List Because...

You've just moved to Europe and would like a premium compact crossover of some kind.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 BMW X1 -- The X1 is a small yet high-class crossover with enthusiast credentials.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class -- The GLA offers a small, premium ride. The AMG version is especially good.

2016 Volkswagen Golf R -- It's not a crossover, but the Golf R offers a wonderful blend of usable performance, all-wheel-drive traction, practicality, premium materials and refinement.

Used Porsche Macan -- The Macan uses the same platform as the Audi Q5, which is still a compact crossover but larger than the Q2 and Q3. It's also great to drive.
