What Is It?
The 2017 Bentley Bentayga is ultraluxury brand Bentley’s first-ever SUV. Featuring styling cues from other Bentley models, the Bentayga boasts a powerful W12 engine, impressive performance numbers and a wide array of luxury equipment.
On the outside, the Bentayga is all Bentley. The SUV uses the brand’s unique grille, along with Bentley’s traditional circular headlights and wide hips above the rear wheels borrowed from the Continental GT coupe. In back, the Bentayga uses Bentley’s distinctive oval-shaped exhausts and a sloping D-pillar that lends credence to the SUV’s amazing performance capabilities.
Just what are those capabilities? The Bentayga uses the same twin-turbocharged W12 engine as the Continental GT and Flying Spur, which touts a massive 600 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque when installed in the SUV. Standard all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission help rocket the SUV from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in around 4 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 187 mph — a number that makes it the fastest SUV in production.
But it isn’t all performance. The Bentayga also touts a high-end interior that features luxurious appointments, a 4-mode adjustable air suspension, a 360-degree parking camera, electronic night vision, 22-way power seats and an 18-speaker Naim sound system. Options include a 4-place seating package with power rear seats and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 10.2-inch screen.
Now that all the details about the Bentayga have emerged, pricing is the big question. We’re not sure what the SUV will cost, but we suspect it’ll start somewhere close to the Continental GT’s base price of $194,000 with shipping.
When Can You Get It?
Add It to Your Shopping List Because…
If you want the fastest, most luxurious SUV on the market, you have no choice but the 2017 Bentley Bentayga. Although we haven’t driven it, we suspect it’ll make normal high-end SUVs such as the Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Porsche Cayenne feel pedestrian. And if you don’t need 600 hp or you want more seats, get ready: The Bentayga is likely to get more powertrain options and a 3-row version in the next few years.
Other Cars to Consider
2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class — The G-Wagen is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable luxury SUVs on the market, but it offers sloppy driving dynamics and an old-school interior that’ll be easily outclassed by the Bentayga’s cabin.
2016 Porsche Cayenne — If it’s performance you’re after, few SUVs compare to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, but the Bentayga will offer more interior space — and the Bentley name.
2016 Range Rover — When it comes to high-end SUVs, the Range Rover is currently the king. It’s a lot cheaper than the Bentayga — even in Autobiography guise — but it doesn’t have the Bentley name.
Used Bentley Mulsanne — The Mulsanne is Bentley’s ultraluxurious flagship sedan. If you want the ultimate Bentley, it’ll be the Mulsanne and not the Bentayga — though pricing is so steep ($305,000 when new) that you may want to consider a used model.
