What Is It?

Saying the 2017 BMW 5 Series is a new generation of premium midsize sedan doesn't even come close to describing how momentous this occasion is. Over its six generations so far, the 5 Series has evolved into a bright star in the automotive universe. It seems to do everything well, offering a spacious sedan body, up-to-the-minute luxury and technology features, and a driving experience to relish.

Now the seventh wave makes its world debut in Detroit with three variants, the 2017 BMW 540i, 2017 BMW M550i xDrive and the 2017 BMW 530e iPerformance.

The 540i has the hallmark BMW setup of an inline 6-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive. This 3.0-liter unit develops 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. The M550i xDrive is the current higher-performance version (until an M5 comes along), enjoying a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 456 hp and 480 lb-ft. BMW says the M550i can sprint from standstill to 60 mph in just 4 seconds. The 530e is the plug-in hybrid version, able to cover 15 miles on electric power only.

Adaptive LED headlights come standard throughout the whole range. Thanks to the use of magnesium, aluminum and high-strength steel, this generation is around 137 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, but the body has greater rigidity. A larger trunk than that of the sixth generation houses 18.7 cubic feet, enough for four sets of golf clubs.

The new 5 Series even offers semi-autonomous driving and safety technology to rival the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, including Evasion Aid, which helps the driver perform sudden maneuvers if an accident is about to happen. All-wheel drive is also available for every model and can now feature rear-wheel steering, a first for BMW's xDrive system.

Other options include gesture control for the infotainment system, a rear-seat entertainment setup, hands-free trunk lid operation and dynamic dampers.

How Much?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series starts at $52,195 for the 248-hp 530i. The 530e is priced from $52,395 and the M550i xDrive starts at $73,095.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Audi A6 -- Refreshed last year and therefore out of sync with its major rivals' newest generations and the segment's technological advances, the A6 is still highly desirable and deeply talented.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class -- All-new for 2017, tingling with technology and arguably one of the world's finest cars.

2017 Tesla Model S -- In this relatively exclusive class, the Model S makes a solid case for itself by offering tech, luxury, driving thrills and zero emissions.

2017 Lexus GS -- Not quite in the same technological, dynamic or luxury leagues as the new 5 Series or E-Class, but charming and well-equipped for the money.

Used Porsche Panamera -- Opulent, involving and even kind of practical with that hatchback.
