What Is It?
The 2017 Buick LaCrosse enters its third generation with an all-new model that’s making its debut at this year’s LA Auto Show. Featuring new styling, mechanical updates and a lot of other revisions compared to the current LaCrosse, the latest model is designed to solidify its standing as Buick’s flagship car.
On the outside, the new LaCrosse is totally new, with new styling all around. It’s a restrained look, especially compared to rivals like the Lincoln MKZ, but that’s what many LaCrosse buyers will want. Inside, the cabin offers a handsome, flowing dashboard design with a few center-stack buttons and a large touchscreen. Although we don’t have the numbers, we suspect the interior room will be top-notch, as it’s a priority for many shoppers in this segment.
Under the hood, the LaCrosse offers only one engine: a 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V6, retained from last year’s model. Not retained is the outgoing sedan’s standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder or the old LaCrosse’s 6-speed automatic transmission; the new model will offer a newly standard 8-speed unit. Like the outgoing LaCrosse, the new one will offer front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
As for equipment, the new LaCrosse is (unsurprisingly) loaded, touting all the latest gadgets like adaptive cruise control, forward-collision alert with automatic braking, a blind spot monitoring system and lane-keep assist. The sedan also boasts an 8-inch touchscreen with available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with improved suspension for enhanced ride quality and handling.
Buick has not yet announced pricing, but we’d expect a noticeable bump from today’s base price of around $32,000, given the loss of the LaCrosse’s standard 4-cylinder engine.

Other Cars to Consider
2016 Lexus ES — The Lexus ES is a mid- to full-size luxury sedan that prioritizes comfort and luxury above all else. Like the LaCrosse, it boasts a large interior, excellent technology and available all-wheel drive. Unlike the LaCrosse, it offers a hybrid variant.
2016 Lincoln MKZ — Lincoln’s best LaCrosse rival is slightly smaller, slightly sportier and far more boldly styled than the new Buick. It also offers an available hybrid version. However, it touts a few similarities, like a comfortable ride and available all-wheel drive.
2016 Toyota Avalon — Think of the Toyota Avalon as a more mainstream version of the luxurious Lexus ES. It features a large interior, more affordable pricing and an available hybrid model.
Used Cadillac XTS — If you want a slightly more upscale badge than the Buick nameplate offers, you might want to check out the luxurious Cadillac XTS. Prices are high, though, so you might have to consider a used model.
