2017 Cadillac XT5: LA Auto Show

What Is It?

The Cadillac XT5 is a brand-new midsize luxury crossover that will replace the popular SRX. Featuring new styling, a new interior and new features, the XT5 also touts a new name, thanks to a recent change in Cadillac's naming scheme.

On the outside, changes between the SRX and XT5 are immediately obvious, though the two crossovers share a similar profile and overall look. Specifically, there's a more serious grille, revised headlights and taillights, new wheel designs and other updates throughout the crossover's exterior.

Changes go just as far on the inside, as the XT5 touts a thoroughly revised dashboard coupled with a new steering wheel, gauge cluster and center control stack. Visibility also improves in the XT5 compared to the outgoing SRX, though rear headroom remains tight. As for equipment, the XT5 is loaded with technology, including Apple CarPlay, forward-collision warning with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control and more.

Under the hood, the SRX is unchanged from last year. There's still a standard 3.6-liter V6, though power inconsequentially changes from 308 horsepower to 310 hp. The SRX also touts a newly standard 8-speed automatic transmission, which should improve smoothness and acceleration compared to the SRX's outgoing 6-speed.

How Much?

Although Cadillac has not yet announced pricing, expect at least a small bump over the outgoing SRX's starting price of around $38,600 with shipping.

When Can You Get It?

Early 2016

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Cadillac is serious about competing with the world's best, and the XT5 seems like an excellent attempt to achieve that goal. Aimed at popular luxury crossovers, such as the Lexus RX and Acura MDX, the XT5 offers the equipment, the technology, the powertrain and the look to go toe-to-toe with those popular models. If your luxury crossover needs can wait until early 2016, we suggest adding the XT5 to your shopping list.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Acura MDX -- Although the Cadillac XT5 bridges the gap between Acura's smaller RDX and the midsize MDX, shoppers interested in both models might want to consider the new Cadillac. All offer luxurious trimmings and a lot of gadgets.

2016 Audi Q5 -- The Q5 boasts a plush interior and fits into the XT5's similar in-between segment by offering midsize sizing and 2-row seating. The Audi is sportier than the Cadillac, but we suspect the XT5 offers more interior room.

2016 Lexus RX 350 -- Like the XT5, the RX offers 2-row seating, a comfort-focused cabin and a lot of technology, not to mention a totally new look. Unlike the XT5, the RX boasts an available hybrid model. The Cadillac is likely to offer more affordable pricing, though.

Used BMW X5 -- If you like the XT5's bold styling but want more panache and performance, you may want to consider the BMW X5. It's a luxurious SUV with especially carlike handling, and it offers the all-important BMW badge on the hood. Prices are higher, though, so you may want to consider a used model.
