2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is awesomeness on four wheels. Or to put it more technically, it's the ultra-high-performance version of the new (sixth) generation of the Camaro coupe. It's street-legal yet track-ready.

Under that power-bulged hood is a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, the same engine that's in the Corvette Z06. In this car, it delivers a massive 640 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. All that muscle goes to the rear wheels through an optional 10-speed automatic transmission (a 6-speed manual transmission is standard). And yes, the automatic setup includes steering-wheel-mounted paddles for those racing-car-style gearshifts.

Specialized equipment includes an electronic limited-slip differential, performance traction management, launch control, a drive-mode selector, mighty Brembo brakes with 6-piston calipers up front, 20-inch forged alloy wheels wearing specially developed Goodyear Eagle high-performance tires, and no less than 11 heat exchangers to stop boiling over on the track. A dedicated aerodynamic body kit includes a rear spoiler, a large front splitter and wide front fenders.

The driver and front passenger sit in standard-issue Recaro sport seats that provide plenty of lateral support through super-fast corners, which they can replay by using the optional performance data recorder that stores video, lap times, speeds, etc.

How Much?

To be announced (possibly around $60,000)

When Can You Get It?

Late 2016

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

It's an all-American muscle car, and it can take on the world.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 -- This Mustang will be an archrival but needs more money spent on it before it's as track-tuned as the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

2016 BMW M4 -- The most muscular version of the M4 "only" musters 444 hp, but this is a ride that dreams are made of.

2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat -- A supercharged V8 makes the 707-hp Hellcat a surefire recipe for extreme thrills.

2016 Porsche 911 Turbo -- The 911 Turbo may seem ambitious, but Chevrolet has stated quite confidently that the Camaro ZL1 "will compare well to any sports coupe, at any price and in any setting."

2017 Nissan GT-R -- Also debuting at the New York show, the 2017 GT-R is now endowed with 565 hp and a virtually foolproof chassis.

Used Chevrolet Corvette Z06 -- The Corvette has big power in a lightweight fiberglass body.
