2017 FIAT Tipo: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 FIAT Tipo is a compact hatchback. The Tipo has been around in Europe and other parts of the world for many years, but it hasn't always been in continuous production. This new generation revives the Tipo name, but it may or may not be relevant to car buyers in North America.

As we all know, FIAT now owns the Chrysler company. We are now able to buy the small 500, the slightly larger 500L and the slightly larger 500X (which is actually a decent subcompact crossover) again. The FIAT 124 Spider (which is based on the Mazda MX-5 Miata) is also expected to be released in the summer. All of the above serves as useful little niches to help build the brand.

However, it may be beyond FIAT's reach at the moment to take part in the compact-car world, which is a whole different ball game. The company certainly hasn't dropped anything approaching a hint that it might sell the 2017 FIAT Tipo in this country, but you never know: The model could be a raging success, and maybe FIAT's top brass will feel emboldened to bring it stateside.

How Much?

When Can You Get It?

Probably never -- unless FIAT changes its corporate mind.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Well, you shouldn't add it yet. If you do, you should put it at the bottom in pencil. In the meantime, assuming that you're considering a new compact hatchback, there's an embarrassment of riches below.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Ford Focus -- The Ford Focus is a prince among compact hatchbacks.

2016 Mazda3 -- This model is fantastic to drive, look at and sit in.

2016 Honda Civic -- The Civic is only available as a sedan at the moment, but a hatch is heading this way later in the year. It's a great car.

2016 Volkswagen Golf -- This model is refined and practical.

Used Volkswagen Golf GTI -- The Golf GTI is refined, practical and fun.
