What Is It?
The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew is the dune-blasting, rock-crushing, mud-slinging, off-roading specialist in the Blue Oval’s all-conquering full-size pickup range. The current F-150, which pushed the proverbial envelope with its aluminum-intensive construction, launched as a 2015 model. Between then and now, we’ve had the regular versions, from base XL to ultra-luxurious Platinum, but it was only a matter of time before there was an all-new Raptor. Here it is in SuperCrew form, making its world debut in Detroit.
Ford says the new Raptor uses more high-strength steel in its frame than its predecessor, making it the strongest of the current F-150 range, yet it’s still 500 pounds lighter than the outgoing model. The SuperCrew cab has four full-size doors for more convenience and space over the regular SuperCab.
There will be no V8 engine, which is something of a shocker. Instead, the Raptor uses a new generation of Ford’s turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, claimed to produce more than the old 6.2-liter V8’s 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque. There aren’t any exact numbers yet, but 500 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque is a fair guess. It employs a dual exhaust system, and it’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, a combination unique to the Raptor so far.
All-wheel drive is standard, naturally, and those wheels are 17-inch alloys wearing all-terrain tires. There’s a multimode drive system for all sorts of terrain. Suspension travel in the previous Raptor is 11.2 inches at the front and 12 inches at the rear. Ford claims better figures in the new model. For an improved handling stance, the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew is 6 inches wider than a regular F-150.

Other Trucks to Consider
2016 RAM 1500 Rebel — The RAM 1500 Rebel is not really a direct competitor, but it should be less expensive and still quite a bit of fun thanks to a 398-hp 5.7-liter V8 and off-roading hardware.
2016 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro — The Toyota Tundra TRD Pro (TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development) is more of a rival to the RAM Rebel than the Raptor. It sports a special off-road-ready suspension, tires and skid plates.
Used Chevrolet Silverado Z71 — The Chevrolet Silverado, in general, is an excellent pickup. Here’s an opportunity to save money and then modify one to your exact specifications.
