What Is It?
Hyundai’s flagship Genesis brand is here. It debuts in the form of the 2017 Genesis G90, a full-size luxury sedan that looks to replace the aging Equus and rival top luxury sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8.
Will it succeed? Based on the interior and exterior design, it would appear that the brand certainly has a shot. The sedan offers bold new styling on the outside, along with a high-end cabin that features impressive materials befitting a high-class luxury sedan. Of course, the G90 also boasts a wide variety of cutting-edge technology, with features such as automatic forward-collision braking, adaptive cruise control and more.
The G90’s powertrains also make it look like a formidable flagship luxury-sedan rival, as it offers two desirable engine options. Base models will use a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6, which makes 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque, while drivers looking for more power can upgrade to a more muscular 5.0-liter V8 that touts 420 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and each can be mated to rear- or all-wheel drive.
Although Hyundai has not yet announced pricing, we suspect the Genesis G90 will include a slight boost over the Equus’ starting price of around $62,500 with shipping.

Hyundai is serious about taking on the luxury segment — and the 2017 Genesis G90 is clearly capable of doing just that. Offering just about everything you might expect from a full-size luxury sedan except for the well-known badge, the G90 boasts a dramatically lower price than most rivals — and Hyundai’s excellent 10-year warranty. While it may not be a hit right away, we suspect we’ll be hearing a lot about the Genesis brand in the coming years.
Other Cars to Consider
2016 Audi A8 — The Audi A8 offers all-wheel drive and a wide range of today’s latest luxury-car features, but it also offers a luxury brand name that the G90 can’t quite touch.
2016 Jaguar XJ — The Jaguar XJ is a popular full-size luxury sedan that offers eye-catching styling and a handsome interior. It also boasts a better-known brand than the Genesis G90 — at least for now.
2016 Lexus LS — The Lexus LS is a full-size luxury sedan that found itself in the G90’s position 25 years ago when it debuted in the U.S. market to disrupt high-end luxury brands such as BMW, Mercedes and Jaguar. These days, the LS is still a popular luxury sedan known for its long-term dependability.
Used Mercedes-Benz S-Class — The S-Class is the gold-standard luxury sedan, boasting the latest style and cutting-edge technology. It’s much more expensive than the G90, though, so you may want to consider a used model.
