2017 Hyundai Elantra: LA Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra compact sedan is all new for this model year. And it follows the trend of mainstream cars offering more and more premium equipment as it enters its sixth generation. For example, there's the option of hands-free trunk opening and intelligent cruise control that maintains a safe distance to the vehicle in front -- the kind of things normally expected from a Mercedes-Benz.

Refinement takes a front seat, not just in relation to cabin materials but also in ride quality and low noise levels. The car is more rigid than its predecessor with a greater amount of high-strength steel in its construction, yet it's also lighter.

As far as passive safety goes, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra is expected to be a top scorer in crash tests. Some of the extra safety features on offer include lane-keeping assist, a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert and a rearview camera.

It probably won't have escaped your notice that the styling is remarkably similar to the current Sonata. Behind that Audi-esque grille, the engine in the base SE and higher Limited trim levels is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder making 147 horsepower and averaging a claimed 33 miles per gallon. The Eco trim gets a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder with direct fuel injection and turbocharging for 156 hp and an anticipated 35 mpg combined.

How Much?

To be announced. The current model starts at $18,075 (including $825 destination).

When Can You Get It?

January 2016

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

It's one of the newest offerings in its class, so the tech is right up to date, the pricing should be attractive, and the car will generally seem like a class above in terms of size and equipment.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Honda Civic -- The 2016 Civic is also a new generation. It's been well received and considered worthy of the name.

2016 Ford Focus -- The Focus has a superb chassis and good equipment levels. Avoid the 1.0 engine, however.

2016 Mazda3 -- The Mazda3 offers smart styling, great driving manners and premium ambience.

2016 Toyota Corolla -- The Corolla is well built, reliable and a perennial best-seller.

Used Hyundai Sonata -- Someone considering an Elantra is no doubt a Hyundai fan and might like to look at one of the best midsize sedans out there.
