2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR is the fastest production car the company has ever built. Taking the already rapid and wonderful 550-horsepower F-TYPE R to another level, the SVR boosts the R's supercharged 5.0-liter V8 up to 575 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. It comes in coupe or convertible form.

The only transmission is an 8-speed automatic, but it's a great, fast-acting unit in the R, so it should be just as superb in the SVR. And that muscle hits the ground through a standard all-wheel-drive system. This allows you to sprint from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 200 mph in the coupe and 195 mph in the convertible.

In Jaguar speak, R usually means high performance, just like M does with BMW. The SV part of the name refers to Jaguar Land Rover's special vehicles department. This is the first Jaguar to wear the SVR badge, following on from the mighty Range Rover Sport SVR that launched in 2015.

This model has plenty of power, but features such as its titanium exhaust keep its weight to a minimum. The drive system also provides separate driving modes from street-friendly to track-attacking. Power can be distributed between each wheel to keep the car on its desired line, and there's the option of carbon-ceramic brake discs for superior, fade-free stopping ability.

How Much?

From $125,950 for the coupe, and from $128,800 for the convertible.

This blend of high power and high style is utterly seductive, and believe it or not, the 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR is quite well priced against competition such as the Porsche 911 Turbo, which starts at over $150,000.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Porsche 911 Turbo -- The 911 is one of the great sports machines, and with 540 hp, the all-wheel-drive Turbo is one of the great 911s.

2017 Audi R8 -- The R8 marks a new generation, starting at $164,000 or so. It's an absolutely gorgeous car to look at and drive.

2016 BMW i8 -- The i8 is an orange compared with an apple, perhaps, but it's still a tempting fruit. This lightweight hybrid sports car only comes as a coupe. It certainly has plenty of presence to match its performance and approximate $142,000 price.

2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S -- This model starts at $131,000 or so and brings 503 hp to a handsome coupe body.

Used Aston Martin DB9 V12 -- The Aston Martin provides a mansion full of upper-class British style and more power than a royal family.
