What Is It?

The 2017 Kia Sportage compact crossover is completely new for this model year, marking the debut of its fourth generation. Space and refinement improve over the outgoing model, which was already good.

It comes with front-wheel drive or the option of all-wheel drive. Advanced active safety features, such as autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, a blind spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert, are also available. All but the lowest trim level (the LX) has Kia's latest iteration of its infotainment system, plus useful tech additions, like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Wi-Fi tethering.

The drivetrain in LX and EX trims consists of a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine making 181 horsepower connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The SX Turbo swaps a 241-hp 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder into the engine bay and also receives a sportier suspension tune. On the safety side, Kia anticipates the new Sportage will earn top scores in independent crash tests.

How Much?

To be announced. Most likely starting in the mid-20s.

When Can You Get It?

Sometime in 2016.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

The previous generation was a serious contender, so the 2017 Kia Sportage should be even more so. Kia makes a virtue of mixing quality with value.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Honda CR-V -- The Honda CR-V is a best-seller that is capable in many areas, but not excellent at one thing in particular.

2016 Toyota RAV4 -- Another mainstay of the segment, the Toyota RAV4 is a safe bet.

2016 Mazda CX-5 -- The Mazda CX-5 drives like it looks, is not at all stodgy and is still practical.

2016 Subaru Forester -- The Subaru Forester is tough, roomy and all-wheel drive comes as standard.

Used Toyota Highlander -- Go one size up and get a Toyota Highlander for more space. The Highlander offers a hybrid version, as well.
