2017 Lamborghini Centenario: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Lamborghini Centenario is more than just an incredible supercar; it's an investment opportunity -- or rather, it was an investment opportunity.

This limited-edition machine commemorates what would have been Ferruccio Lamborghini's 100th birthday. The good Mr. L was never one to shy away from extroverted design, and there's no doubt he would have approved of this stunning creation. But it isn't just the styling that has the power to stun.

Set behind the driver and passenger seats is a 770-horsepower V12 engine, making this the most powerful car Lamborghini has ever built. Naturally, it's not possible to rev the engine on an auto-show stand, but the 2017 Lamborghini Centenario is surely as much of a treat for the ears as it is for the eyes.

This engine is combined with a body that's mostly made out of carbon fiber, a material used in racing cars because it's so strong and light. The Centenario is capable of launching from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in just 2.8 seconds; it hits a top speed of more than 217 mph. Its grip is maintained by a permanent all-wheel-drive system, and its agility is enhanced by a rear-wheel steering feature.

You've probably already been thinking this, but it really does look like it should be the latest Batmobile. With its gorgeous design surrounding jet-cockpit technology, this model gives the same impression on the inside, as well. The high-resolution 10.1-inch touchscreen can display lap times and lateral forces, in addition to more regular features such as Apple CarPlay.

Buyers will start to receive their 2017 Lamborghini Centenarios this fall and into the following year. Only 40 examples will be built: 20 coupes and 20 roadsters. This is where the investment angle comes in; it's a simple case of supply and demand. Other limited-edition Lamborghini models, such as the Reventon and Sesto Elemento, have gone up in value, and the Centenario will surely follow the same formula.

How Much?

From $1.9 million before taxes using current exchange rates.

When Can You Get It?

Every car is already sold out. But don't worry: Lamborghini is sure to make another amazing limited-edition supercar.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

You knew about this in advance since you probably acquired another Lamborghini in the recent past, and you had the necessary funds to invest.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Ferrari LaFerrari -- This $1.4 million supercar is a hybrid. It goes from zero to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and hits a top speed of 218 mph.

2016 Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce -- This model comes with performance figures similar to the Centenario and has the typically loud Lamborghini look. But it's a fraction of the price: $500,000.

Used Bugatti Veyron -- The Veyron was the fastest, most powerful production supercar in the world for a while.
