What Is It?
The 2017 Maserati Levante is a luxury midsize SUV, similar to the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, so it has a dash of sportiness to it that many other midsize SUV crossovers lack — as it should, considering Maserati is an Italian marque renowned for making sports cars. It used to compete on the racetrack with Ferrari back when no one wore helmets and not just engines smoked in the paddock.
Since then, its fortunes have waxed and waned, but it is now part of the FIAT/Chrysler corporation, bringing some romance and exclusivity to the game. Of course, any company that wants to survive usually has to bend to the will of the great SUV buyer sooner or later. For Maserati, that time has arrived.
It’s now common practice to build SUVs on existing car platforms. In the Levante’s case, it’s the same base as Maserati’s Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans, and it will be produced in Turin. Naturally, it has all-wheel drive, a gorgeous interior and a sophisticated suspension. Engine-wise, we’re looking at a 3.0-liter turbo V6 or a 4.7-liter turbo V8 behind that iconic trident emblem on the grille.
To be announced. Maserati sedans are pricier than their German rivals, so if a Porsche Cayenne started at around $60,000, then expect the 2017 Maserati Levante to be $70,000 or more.
