2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF (retractable fastback) is a version of the superb MX-5 Miata with a retractable hard top. There's been an MX-5 with a folding hard top before, but this one is so well realized, not just in regard to the looks (check out those miniature flying buttresses of the rear pillars) but also from an engineering standpoint.

Although there will naturally be something of a weight penalty (so far undisclosed), this RF model preserves the same amount of trunk space as the soft-top counterpart (about 4.6 cu ft.) and uses the same 2.0-liter 155-horsepower 4-cylinder engine. Mazda says the top can also be operated on the move at speeds of up to 6 mph. It helps that the New York show model of the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is finished in a new paint color that will also be available on other Mazda vehicles: machine gray -- very high tech.

How Much?

To be announced, but the 2016 MX-5 soft-top starts at $25,750.

When Can You Get It?

To be announced

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

When it finally does get here, the RF version will make the MX-5 more of a year-round car, instead of merely a toy for the summer.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Subaru BRZ -- The BRZ is strictly a coupe with a fixed metal roof, but has a similar formula of smallish engine and excellent rear-drive dynamics.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata -- It's not as if the soft-top version is some kind of consolation prize. And who could blame you if you didn't want to wait for the RF?

2016 Chevrolet Camaro -- Now available as a soft-top convertible, the 2016 Camaro has a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine.

Used BMW Z4 -- The Z4 has a bigger engine and a more plush appointment.
