What Is It?
The 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet, E43 sedan and GLC43 midsize crossover are all signs of intense activity in the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz. What started out as a little tuning house has become one of the company’s greatest assets.
We were introduced to the all-new compact C-Class Cabriolet (or 4-seater soft-top convertible) only a few weeks ago at the Geneva show. Now we find that AMG has taken it, widened the track, lowered the suspension, added a limited-slip rear differential and swapped in a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine for 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. But that’s not all. There’s an even more powerful version, the C63 S, with 503 hp, 516 lb-ft of torque and dynamic engine mounts.
The 2017 Mercedes-AMG E43 is the first high-performance variant of the new generation of E-Class premium sedan. The whole range is fresh for the 2017 model year. In this car, a relatively restrained 396 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque is generated by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6. But it can still sprint from standstill to 60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds. That’s only a little slower than the C63 Cabriolets above. It also wets the appetite for an E63, which will surely come along soon.
The same engine has been eased off the steroids slightly to 362 hp (but with the same amount of torque) for the all-new 2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC45. The regular GLC300 replaced the old GLK premium crossover last year and for a time was the only vehicle in the range. Now it’s been joined by an AMG version that naturally includes all of the usual upgrades, such as a re-tuned suspension (in this case, it’s an air suspension that now has adaptive dampers), stronger brakes and a dedicated cosmetic package.
