2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe: Frankfurt Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe is a 2-door coupe version of the recently redesigned Mercedes C-Class. It replaces the previous C-Class Coupe, which retained the outgoing model's design as the C-Class Sedan was redesigned for the 2015 model year.

On the outside, the C-Class Coupe looks like a mixture of the C-Class Sedan in the front and the S-Class Coupe in back. While the outgoing model looked like a C-Class with two fewer doors, the new version offers a style of its own with a totally new rear end and a sporty, steeply raked window line and C-pillar.

Inside, the C-Class Coupe is exactly how you'd expect it to be, with virtually every design element borrowed from the C-Class Sedan. That's not a bad thing though, as we like the C-Class' interior, and we think it translates well to the coupe.

Although Mercedes hasn't released specs on the U.S.-bound C-Class Coupe, we expect powertrain offerings to roughly mirror those of the sedan. As a result, expect a base-level C300 with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, a midlevel C450 with a turbocharged V6 and a high-performance C63 AMG with a turbocharged V8. We also expect a choice between rear-wheel drive and 4MATIC all-wheel drive, along with a wide range of modern safety features and high-tech gadgets.

How Much?

Although Mercedes has yet to announce pricing, we'd expect a slight increase over the C-Class Sedan's starting price of $39,900 for the C300, $51,800 for the C450 and $66,300 for the C63 AMG.

When Can You Get It?

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Although the outgoing C-Class Coupe was little more than a C-Class Sedan with two fewer doors, the latest model adds extra character. There's a new look and new powerplants offering excellent horsepower numbers, perfect for a sleek new coupe. With the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, Mercedes may be demonstrating that it's finally ready to take on the BMW 3 (and 4) Series in more than just the sedan game.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Audi A5 and S5 -- The Audi A5 and S5 are handsome 2-door 4-seaters offered in coupe or cabriolet form. Performance from the S5 is strong, but the model's design is becoming outdated.

2016 BMW 4 Series -- BMW's recently renamed 4 Series is essentially the coupe and convertible version of the popular 3 Series sedan. Traditionally, BMWs offered a more involved driving experience than their Mercedes rivals, but we're not sure if that'll remain true with the latest C-Class.

2015 Infiniti Q60 -- Although Infiniti's Q60 coupe and convertible are increasingly outdated, they still offer an impressive performance bargain in this segment, and a new coupe model is less than a year away.

Used BMW M3 -- If you're interested in a sporty German luxury coupe, the M3 is a great choice, as it'll offer more performance and better handling than all but the top-level AMG-tuned C-Class models. New ones are pricy though, so you may want to consider a used model.
