2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

Think of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe as a rival to the BMW X4. Essentially, we have a premium compact crossover SUV (similar to the regular GLC-Class and the BMW X3), only with more of a sloping roof — what some people like to call 4-door coupe styling. Other than that, the GLC Coupe offers the same engine and all-wheel-drive system (4MATIC, in Mercedes-Benz terms) as the straight-ahead GLC300, which means there’s a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine turbocharged to make 241 horsepower linked to a 9-speed automatic transmission, plus many safety and convenience features as standard, such as a rearview camera, a power tailgate, collision-prevention assist and crosswind assist.

There’s a twist, however: When the company launched the regular — and excellent — GLC, it started out as a 1-vehicle range, but the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe comes out fighting with two models, the second being the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC43 Coupe. This brings a suspension and braking system tuned by the go-faster AMG division, along with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 for a delicious 362 hp.

How Much?

To be announced. For a ballpark, the 2016 BMW X4 xDrive28i starts at around $46,000; the higher-performance 2016 X4 M40i starts close to $59,000.

When Can You Get It?

Early 2017

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

The GLC is just too useful, with all that extra headroom in the rear and expanded cargo space. In all seriousness, it will probably make it on to your shopping list because you like the looks and the undoubted prestige of the Mercedes-Benz brand.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Acura RDX — Not so coupelike, but the RDX does its best to avoid looking too boxy.

2016 BMW X4 — The X4 is upscale, great to drive and offers that currently fashionable sloping roof.

2017 Jaguar F-PACE — This Jaguar will be all new when it arrives this fall. It’s not a 4-door coupe crossover as such, but still pretty sleek.

2016 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque — The Evoque has been upgraded for this model year and has an "upper-class Brit" kind of appeal.

2016 Lexus NX — The NX offers an always-superb construction, plus it brings a new kind of attitude from Lexus.

2016 Porsche Macan — The Macan doesn’t need to look any sleeker: It already offers a driving experience worthy of the badge.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class — The GLC-Class is the same as the so-called coupe, only with more practicality.

Used BMW X6 — The X6 is larger and comes with a choice of gutsier engines.
