2017 Nissan GT-R: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

It’s upgrade time for the 2017 Nissan GT-R. This is the company’s super-powerful sports coupe that has the abilities to embarrass a Ferrari. For this model year, we see changes to the exterior styling, as it adopts a version of Nissan’s V-shaped corporate grille. The 20-inch alloy wheels have a new design, and the side sills are pushed out further to improve aerodynamics, but the rear still has that hallmark quad-lamp design that’s usually all we ever see of the GT-R as it disappears down the road.

The interior has also received attention, and although the front seats are now thinner (to reduce weight), the general ambience is of a higher quality, with some fine leather around the instrument panel. Nissan also says the body has been stiffened to improve the handling. But let’s get to the real business.

Under the redesigned hood, the handcrafted 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine has been boosted by 20 horsepower and 4 lb-ft, bringing total engine output to a scary-good 565 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque. Nissan says it now provides even better acceleration on the midrange and high range. The company hasn’t quoted any performance figures yet, but the 2016 model can hit 60 miles per hour from a standstill in just 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 191 mph.

The 6-speed dual-clutch transmission has been refined for smoother shifts, and there’s a new titanium sport exhaust. If that isn’t loud enough, Nissan has introduced a new paint color: Blaze Metallic Orange.

How Much?

To be announced. The 2016 GT-R starts in the region of $102,000, but each year seems to see a substantial price hike.

When Can You Get It?

Summer 2016

The 2017 Nissan GT-R continues to be one of the great performance machines to come out of Japan. It hasn’t earned the nickname “Godzilla” for nothing.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Acura NSX — The NSX is all new for 2017, and it’s efficiently rapid.

2016 Porsche 911 Turbo — Kind of refined these days, the 911 is still monstrously powerful and agile.

2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 — The Corvette is actually a performance bargain, with 650 hp from a supercharged 6.2 V8.

Used Lamborghini Gallardo — To get something with even more presence, this is the level you have to reach.
