2017 Nissan GT-R Track Edition: New York Auto Show

 What Is It?

The final member of this performance-car triad, the 2017 Nissan GT-R Track Edition slots in between the GT-R Premium and GT-R NISMO versions. Borrowing a little from both, the Track Edition is sort of the Baby Bear just-right GT-R for drivers satisfied with the Premium's already aggressive hand-assembled 565-horsepower 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, but yearn for more of a race-car feel.

From the NISMO, the Track Edition gets the race-ready car's reinforced body made sturdier through adhesive bonding and some additional spot welds. NISMO also provides the suspension tuning, which includes some weight reduction, as well as extra roll stiffness. Where the rubber meets the road, Nissan also included NISMO 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in NISMO-spect tires. The front fenders are NISMO as is the carbon-fiber rear spoiler. The exhaust system is titanium.

Otherwise, the Track Edition provides all the comfort and civilized accessories of the Premium. Surprisingly well-mannered, the Premium is suited as a daily driver. Leather-covered Recaro front-bucket seats highlight the red-and-black interior. Acoustic glass and some extra sound-deadening materials provide a firewall against outside noise. A Bose-infused audio system includes Active Noise Cancellation, as well as Active Sound Enhancement.

Providing exceptional balance, the Midship platform locates the some of the heavier components, like the transmission and transfer case at the rear of GT-R. All-wheel drive delivers a bit of extra stability in nasty weather, as well as helping acceleration.

You're kidding, right? Actually, the Nissan GT-R Track Edition is not for everyone, but when only a scalded-cat performance car will do, who ya gonna call? Dynamite good looks and bottle rocket-like acceleration translate into a must-have for any performance freak.

 Other Cars to Consider

2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 -- Bug-eyed acceleration, spot-on handling and muscle-car good looks.

2017 Ford Shelby GT350 -- Has Shelby in its name, untamed acceleration and a great exhaust note.

2017 Lexus RC F -- Gorgeous styling, luxury cabin and a great-sounding V8.
