What Is It?
The 2017 Nissan Titan XD full-size pickup truck now comes with gasoline power to complement its diesel-powered sibling. It’s a 5.6-liter V8 that develops 390 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Nissan says it uses variable valve timing and direct fuel injection, but what we don’t know yet is how much it can tow and how much it will haul. The 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 makes 555 lb-ft of torque and, when properly equipped, can tow 12,314 pounds. It can also take 2,091 pounds in its bed.
The XD, by the way, stands for “extra duty.” This truck sits between conventional half-ton trucks, such as the Ford F-150, and three-quarter-ton trucks, such as the Ford F-250. It combines serious work capability with sublime civility. It debuted in late 2015 as the first model of an all-new Titan generation.
Now there’s the 2017 Nissan Titan, the non-XD, half-ton version, which was built on its own chassis. This is a more direct competitor to trucks such as the F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado. It uses the same gasoline V8 that has just debuted in the XD (linked to a 7-speed automatic transmission) and also starts out with a crew cab. Bed lengths are 5.5, 6.5 and 8 feet. Trim levels mirror the XD, too: S, SV Pro-4X (with all-wheel drive as standard and set up more for off-road duty), SV and the luxurious Platinum Reserve. More Titan variants and a V6 gasoline engine are all in the pipeline.
Beginning with a crew cab, S trim, the gasoline V8 and rear-wheel drive, the XD range starts at $36,485.
Pricing for the regular 2017 Nissan Titan is yet to be announced.

Other Cars to Consider
2016 Ford F-150 — The F-150 is one year into its new aluminum-intensive generation. The most powerful engine is a twin-turbo V6 that makes 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque.
2016 Chevrolet Silverado — The Silverado was revised for the 2016 model year, and it’s as good as these vehicles get.
2016 GMC Sierra — The Sierra is essentially the same as the Silverado.
2016 RAM 1500 — The RAM 1500 is the one contender here that uses coil springs in the back (instead of the usual leaf springs) for a refined ride. It’s still incredibly capable, though.
2017 Nissan Titan XD — The Nissan Titan XD has an excellent Cummins diesel engine. It offers plenty of torque and a quiet cabin. Overall, it’s a joy to drive.
Buying a used model wouldn’t necessarily result in anything better. You might want to go for a more heavy-duty truck, but it wouldn’t be as pleasant to drive.
