2017 Subaru Impreza: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is a new generation of the company’s stalwart compact sedan and hatchback. It’s the first model to be built from the new Subaru Global Platform, which will form the basis for virtually every other new Subaru. This will be a good thing, because the company is making big claims about the increase in torsional rigidity: 70 to 100 percent.

That brings benefits in safety and impact absorption but also allows suspension engineers to make finer adjustments, something that is also enhanced by a lower center of gravity compared with previous generations. Subaru also promises more interior space and up-to-the-minute technology. Naturally, the company will stick to its approach of offering all-wheel drive as standard. The familiar flat-4 engine configuration remains, and there should be a higher-performance WRX version in the lineup.

Right now, the emphasis is on styling. It comes as no real surprise, because we’ve already seen concepts at earlier car shows. Design has never been a Subaru strong point, but this model certainly takes some steps in the right direction. The front overhang (no doubt to accommodate the flat-4 engine) seems a bit too long, however, but at least the interior materials look classier than before.

How Much?

To be announced. The 2016 Subaru Impreza range starts at around $19,000.

When Can You Get It?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i is expected to go on sale in late 2016.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

There are so many top-notch compact cars, but the Impreza is the only one with all-wheel drive as standard equipment throughout its range.
