2017 Toyota Corolla: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Toyota Corolla celebrates the 50th anniversary of the popular compact car with two key changes: some big revisions compared to the current model, which made its debut for the 2014 model year, and a new 50th Anniversary Special Edition variant, which touts a few unique changes over a standard model.

The biggest updates for 2017 come to the regular Corolla, as Toyota has made some crucial tweaks to the sedan to keep it competitive against popular challengers. Among them are newly available safety features such as lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control and a forward-collision alert system, all of which will be offered in a new Toyota Safety Sense package, which is available for all trims. Other changes include a newly standard backup camera, LED headlights and a larger center screen for the Entune infotainment system.

As for the 50th Anniversary Special Edition model, Toyota is touting several important upgrades. Based on the Corolla SE, the 50th Anniversary model will add unique 17-inch alloy wheels, 50th anniversary badging, black cherry contrast interior stitching and Toyota’s Entune Audio Plus system with a navigation app. Toyota says that the new 50th Anniversary Corolla will be limited to 8,000 units, and will reach dealers this fall.

How Much?

For the newly updated 2017 Corolla, we don’t expect a significant bump over today’s model, which starts at around $18,200 with shipping. The 50th anniversary model, however, will likely command a slight price increase over the Corolla SE, which starts at around $21,500 with shipping.

When Can You Get It?

The 2017 Toyota Corolla will likely go on sale during the middle of 2016, while the 50th Anniversary Special Edition model will reach dealers this fall.

Add It To Your Shopping List Because…

Although the Corolla has a lot to offer shoppers who are interested in a roomy, comfortable compact sedan, it’s been far behind its rivals in terms of technology ever since the latest Mazda3 went on sale in 2014. With the addition of several crucial safety features for 2017, it finally gains some of the technological advancement that it needs to keep up with new rivals such as the Mazda3 and the recently redesigned Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra. As for the 50th anniversary model, well, it doesn’t offer many substantive benefits over a regular Corolla — but we like its new wheels and black cherry interior and exterior touches.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Honda Civic — The latest Honda Civic is undoubtedly the class leader, touting a roomy interior and lots of equipment. It also boasts efficient new engines, along with coupe and upcoming hatchback body styles.

2017 Hyundai Elantra — The newly redesigned Hyundai Elantra is more grown-up than previous models, boasting handsome new styling and a wide range of tech features. It also touts Hyundai’s excellent 10-year warranty.

2017 Mazda3 — The Mazda3 is a handsome compact car that’s offered in sedan or hatchback variants. Touting sharp handling, lots of technology and excellent gas mileage, the Mazda3 is a formidable rival.

Used Toyota Camry — If you like the Corolla’s look, comfort and reputation for reliability, but you need more space, you should consider the Camry. New models are pricier, so you may have to consider a used version — but the Camry is highly popular, so even 1-year-old models should be plentiful.
