2017 Volvo S90: Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2017 Volvo S90 is an all-new large luxury sedan. It's based on the same platform as the excellent and still quite new XC90 SUV. Along with a sophisticated exterior and simple yet classy interior, Volvo is including a feature it calls Pilot Assist. It's a system that can steer the car up to 80 miles per hour. When working in tandem with City Safety -- which can detect and help the driver react to other cars, pedestrians, cyclists and animals -- the S90 is essentially a semiautonomous vehicle.

It will be the first car to go on sale in the United States with self-driving tech standard. This is all in keeping with the company's intention that "no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by the year 2020." That's only 4 years away.

Engine choices run to 240 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder, 316 hp in a higher tune of the same unit or a combined 400 hp from a plug-in hybrid variant. The basic version uses front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive will be available.

How Much?

To be announced (possibly starting in the high 40s).

When Can You Get It?

It's the future, although plenty of other cars will come out with similar tech. The 2017 Volvo S90 is not too mainstream, and the company excels at super-comfortable seats.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Audi A6 -- The A6 is one of the benchmarks for great exterior and interior design. It shares front- or all-wheel-drive options with the S90 and isn't short of tech.

2016 BMW 5 Series -- The 5 Series is another benchmark of the sector, with top-class engines and equipment, but an updated model is in the pipeline.

2016 Cadillac CTS -- The CTS has all the right ingredients, as long as the styling works for you.

2016 Lexus GS -- The GS is now offering a turbo 4-cylinder, V6 and hybrid variants.

2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class -- A new generation is just about to hit the market, and it will no doubt be the one to beat. This will also have some degree of self-piloting.

Used Lexus LS -- It could be any larger luxury sedan for this choice, really, but the LS has such great reliability and a useful amount of standard equipment.
