2018 Audi Q5 and 2018 Audi A5/S5 Sportback: Paris Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2018 Audi Q5 represents the debut of this premium compact crossover's second generation. Over on a different part of Audi's stand at the 2016 Paris Auto Show are the new 2018 A5 and S5 Sportback compact cars.

The Q5 will offer an air suspension, Audi's virtual cockpit, advanced safety and semiautonomous driving features, and a touch pad that recognizes handwritten commands (expect similar delights in the A5/S5 Sportback). The basic engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder delivering 252 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The sportier SQ5 version enjoys 272 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from its supercharged 3.0-liter V6.

Buyers in the U.S. are familiar with the A5, a coupe derived from the A4 sedan, and its more powerful S5 counterpart, but 4-door versions (well, technically five doors, since this is a hatchback) are coming across the Atlantic for the first time. Think of a smaller A7 Sportback (which comes from the A6 sedan) or a rival to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The A5 Sportback is motivated by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that develops 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The S5 receives a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 for 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Both variants are expected to have all-wheel drive as standard.

This crossover and these hatchbacks seem like markedly different machines, but they're all based on the same platform, which is also shared by the new A4 and Q7. It's lighter than its predecessor, which delivers benefits in the driving experience. The S5 should be especially enjoyable.

How Much?

To be announced. The current Q5 starts at roughly $42,000. Audi says the new version will be "just slightly more expensive."

Around $45,000 for the A5 Sportback and $55,000 for the S5 version wouldn't be bad guesstimates.

When Can You Get It?

The 2018 Audi Q5 and the 2018 Audi A5/S5 Sportback should arrive in the U.S. in the first part of 2017.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

The first generation of Q5 is highly capable and has already become a popular choice. The second generation will no doubt perform to an even higher level.

The A5 Sportback brings style and practicality, while the S5 adds more power.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 BMW X3 -- The X3 is one of the best compact crossovers with considerable talents in many areas.

2017 Jaguar F-PACE -- The F-PACE deserves to be on this list because it's all new, drives exceptionally well and looks good.

2017 Lexus NX -- The NX brings a good build, good equipment levels and so-so dynamics.

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class -- The GLC-Class offers a degree of sophistication derived from the excellent (and fresh) C-Class sedan, with a quality interior and ride.

Used Porsche Macan -- Based on the same platform as the outgoing Q5, the Macan is more expensive when bought new and comes with a sportier suspension and a superb cabin.

2017 Audi A4 -- Perhaps an A5 Sportback gives up more rear space than desirable. If so, the new-generation A4 sedan should do the trick.

2017 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe -- Yes, the 4 Series was supposed to cover 2-door versions of the 3 Series, but then the whole 4-door coupe idea took hold, and now we have the Gran Coupe. Nice car, though.

2017 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 -- The AMG CLA45 375-hp performance compact sedan is styled like a 4-door coupe. It's quick and classy.

Used Audi A7 Sportback -- An A7 offers more space, and it's not as if it looks old-fashioned compared with the new wave of Audi cars.
