2018 Ford EcoSport: LA Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2018 Ford EcoSport -- apart from having a name that seems to pull in two different directions at once -- is a subcompact crossover based on the excellent Ford Fiesta platform.

It's been out in Europe for a while, and since the company has had a run of successes with vehicles developed in the Old World then brought to the New, Ford could potentially have launched it stateside much earlier. But subcompact crossovers are gaining in popularity, so maybe the timing is perfect.

Many hours have been spent making sure the EcoSport has youth appeal. It offers an optional B&O Play high-end audio system (standard in the top Titanium trim) that cranks out 675 watts through 10 carefully placed speakers, including a subwoofer situated in the rear. Naturally, smartphone integration comes courtesy of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while USB ports and power outlets make sure everyone's devices are charged up.

The EcoSport comes in S, SE, SES and Titanium trim levels, along with a choice of 10 exterior colors and seven ambient-lighting hues for the cabin. Ford calls the side-hinged rear door a "swing gate," and the handle for it is located in the right-hand-side taillight cluster.

Engine choices include a turbocharged 1.0-liter 3-cylinder unit or a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. Ford hasn't quoted power or consumption figures yet, but the 3-cylinder turbo in the Fiesta makes 123 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Both will be linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is optional.

How Much?

Pricing is to be announced, but the 2017 Honda HR-V starts at just over $20,000, so that's the ballpark.

When Can You Get It?

Early 2018

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Small crossovers are big news, and the 2018 Ford EcoSport will be one of the more entertaining candidates.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Chevrolet Trax -- Revamped for 2017, the Trax is spacious, economical and well-equipped.

2017 Honda HR-V -- The HR-V is capable and comparatively roomy, and Honda's build quality and reliability are always good virtues to have.

2017 FIAT 500X -- The 500X is charming, with a design that's more overtly European than the EcoSport.

2017 Jeep Renegade -- This one is for outdoorsy types; because it's a Jeep, it actually has some off-roading talent.

2017 Mazda CX-3 -- The CX-3 offers a great chassis, cool styling and good equipment levels.

Used Ford Escape -- It's one size up, it drives well (based on a Focus), and a certified pre-owned model could come with quite a few options. Plus, someone else has taken that initial depreciation hit.
