What Is It?
The 2018 Ford F-150 is a reminder that if you stand still in the automotive world, you’re really going backwards. Just 3 years after the debut of Generation 13, notable for its extensive use of aluminum for the body (a radical move for a working truck), the 2018 model year brings a midcycle redesign and some technical developments.
The most obvious change is the grille, but the tailgate has also been revised, the cabin features fresh fabric colors, and there are new designs of alloy wheels ranging in diameter from 17 to 22 inches.
This is the first pickup to offer adaptive cruise control and pre-collision assistance with pedestrian detection. Buyers can also choose a 4G LTE modem for a Wi-Fi hot spot, a 360-degree camera system, a blind spot monitoring system and lane-keep assist.
Joining the 2.7-liter and 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engines and the 5.0-liter V8 is a new entry-level engine, a 3.3-liter V6. Ford says it will make the same power (282 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque) as the 3.5-liter unit it replaces.
And for the first time, there’s a diesel alternative. It’s a 3.0-liter V6, and it will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, but there are no output or consumption figures yet. A hybrid drivetrain is also in the works.
Two more nuggets of Ford news from Detroit. The Ranger midsize pickup is making a comeback for 2019, and a new Bronco SUV is expected in 2020.
