What Is It?
The 2018 Jaguar E-Pace is an all-new premium compact crossover from a British marque more renowned for making sleek sedans and sports cars. It’s smaller than the highly popular Jaguar F-Pace, going up against rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
Tastes will vary, but the E-Pace certainly doesn’t look like it’s been hit by the ugly stick — more like buffed by the handsome cloth. The cabin of the Frankfurt show car appears to be quite classy, in contrast to some disappointing interiors in other Jaguar models. It will offer all the obligatory amenities like Wi-Fi (for a maximum of eight devices) and USB ports (up to five), plus the availability of a next-generation head-up display. Several advanced safety features will also come as standard, like forward-collision mitigation and blind spot monitoring.
In the engine bay is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit making 246 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque for the entry model. The E-Pace R-Dynamic version sees those figures boosted to 296 hp and 295 lb-ft, making it one of the more powerful turbo fours on the scene. In both versions, a 9-speed automatic transmission sends drive to all four wheels.
The 2018 Jaguar E-Pace starts at $39,595. For context, the all-wheel-drive 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4Matic is priced from $36,395, but some electronic driver aids are extra.
