2018 Jaguar F-TYPE: New York Auto Show

 What is It?

Think the 2018 Jaguar F-TYPE is gorgeous but don't really care that much about the accompanying rip-snorting V8 and supercharged V6 engines? Well, Jaguar has the answer for you, as there's a new entry-level model that features a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine along with a lower price point.

Although there are only half as many cylinders as in the full-Habanero F-TYPE, the new engine produces a still-ample 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Paired only with rear-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic, Jaguar says the engine will propel the F-TYPE from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. That's quite quick.

Helping acceleration is a loss of around 100 pounds compared to a V6-equipped F-TYPE Coupe (four cylinders weigh less than six). That trip to Jenny Craig should also make the F-FYPE feel sharper around corners, as taking weight off the front wheels is apt to do. We would also expect an improvement in fuel economy, but we'll have to wait a bit for official estimates.

Besides the new engine, the 2018 Jaguar F-TYPE gets new LED headlights and a slight redesign of its side vents, along with a much-needed infotainment upgrade.

 How Much?

The new 4-cylinder results in a lower base price for 2018, at $59,900.

 When Can You Get It?

Jaguar indicated "later this year," which doesn't exactly narrow it down. We would think late summer or early fall.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

You love the F-TYPE but have previously not been able to afford it or just didn't need all that power. Rarely is increased variety a bad thing.

 Other Cars to Consider

2017 Porsche 718 Boxster -- Updated for 2017 to also include turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. For pure driving enjoyment, it doesn't get much better than this. However, there's no engine in the Boxster's portfolio to match the F-TYPE's V8.

2017 Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class -- The SLC also comes with a 4-cylinder turbo, and although it doesn't match the Jag for looks, it does feature a retractable hardtop roof.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray -- The Corvette is comparable in many respects to the V8-powered F-TYPE models and costs much less.

Used Aston Martin V8 Vantage -- Sensational looks. It's an entry-level model but still feels incredibly special. Its much higher price tag will mean you'll probably be looking at a low-mileage used model.
