2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is the most powerful production SUV in the world. That's thanks to the 707-horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that first won hearts and soiled underwear in the Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

We've been part of the way down this road before with the 475-hp Grand Cherokee SRT, one of just a handful of SUVs that can be driven around a track and not turn into a heap of relatively slow-moving, slack-handling mush. Now the Trackhawk is set to propel us toward the horizon by sprinting from standstill to 60 mph in a breathtaking 3.5 seconds (in launch control mode) before reaching a top speed of 180 mph.

All-wheel drive and 20-in alloy wheels (10-in wide) are standard, plus an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Track mode distributes the torque 30/70 front to rear, so powerslides should be possible, and the infotainment system includes a lap timer. Bringing all this action to a halt are huge Brembo brakes with 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston counterparts out back.

The Trackhawk also has a well-behaved valet mode (to reduce temptation), leather upholstery, noise-cancelling technology, parking assistance and safety features like adaptive cruise control, forward-collision mitigation, blind spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance.

How Much?

To be announced. The 2017 Grand Cherokee SRT is around $68,000, so $80,000 wouldn't be out of the question.

When Can You Get It?

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is expected later in 2017.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

707 hp. And 645 lb-ft of torque. In an SUV.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 BMW X5 M -- To get even close to the Trackhawk's prodigious power and ability means going for something expensive and European. The X5 M enjoys 567 hp and incredible driving talents.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR -- Surprisingly good off-road and delightfully fast on it, courtesy of 550 hp.

2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE63 S -- With 577 hp to play with and 4.1 seconds to 60 mph, it might have been considered extreme before the Trackhawk came along.

2017 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S -- 570 hp and 60 mph coming up in 3.8 seconds. But virtually twice the projected price of the Jeep. Then again, it is a Porsche.
