 What Is It?

Reflecting the carmaker's face-to-face approach to customer research, the redesigned 2018 Lincoln Navigator has a gaggle of surprising customer-convenience features. Some of these migrated over from the latest Continental, and others are fresh to the Navigator.

Motivating the 2018 Lincoln Navigator is a 450-horsepower twin-turbo V6 bound to a 10-speed automatic transmission. As if this wasn't sufficient for acceleration needs, engineers managed to reduce the Navigator's bulk by almost 200 pounds, mostly through the use of aluminum in the body. This, Lincoln says, provides a smoother ride and more towing capacity. In addition to the regular-length model, there's an L version that stretches the body by more than a foot, hugely expanding the cargo area. Lincoln is claiming the roomiest second- and third-row seating among 3-row SUVs.

Although Lincoln is still certifying fuel economy and towing limits, towing is improved with the Trailer Backup feature, which makes backing a trailer a much more logical, intuitive undertaking.

Luxury and customer pampering are core to the Navigator's mission statement. Lincoln seems to have overlooked not even the smallest detail in making the Navigator experience exceptional for driver and passenger alike. Personal Profile allows up to three separate drivers to input a number of tailored settings like seat position, steering wheel, audio, climate and even navigation preferences. There's a memory function for the front-passenger seat as well. The Navigator offers the largest head-up display in the industry, which can be clearly seen through polarized lenses. Every row has fast-charging USB ports.

With Perfect Position Seats, both front-seat occupants will be treated to heating, cooling and massage capabilities, as well as adjustments up to 30 different ways. The lift gate can easily be preset to open to any height, accommodating differing garage and driver heights.

Lincoln incorporated all sorts of lighting schemes into the Navigator. It begins with a slow ramp-up of exterior lights as the driver approaches the vehicle, transitioning into ambient cabin lighting and even adaptive headlights that cover a wider area at slower speeds to provide more visibility in residential areas.

An impressive array of safety and driver-assist technologies conspire to make the Navigator one of the more intuitive vehicles to operate in the industry.

 How Much?

To be announced. The 2017 Navigator base price is $64,710.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because....

If a large luxury SUV is in your future, the 2018 Lincoln Navigator combines over-the-top pampering with cutting-edge technology and scads of passenger and cargo room. Lincoln offers a service valet that will collect the Navigator at your door, drop off a loaner Lincoln and return the Navigator to your specified location when the servicing is finished. Lincoln also currently has a pilot program underway for a chauffeur service that provides a Lincoln-certified driver to run errands, shop for you or drive you wherever you need to go in your Lincoln.
