What Is It?
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet is, unsurprisingly, a 4-seat, soft-top version of this new (fifth) generation of the E-Class. It’s longer and wider than its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase, which is always a good omen for passenger space and comfort. It rides 0.6 of an inch lower than the sedan, for a little more of the cool factor, and does so on 18-inch alloy wheels.
This new model launches with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 (Mercedes-Benz hasn’t quoted output figures yet, but the same engine makes 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque in the 2017 E400 coupe) and a 9-speed automatic transmission. So chances are it will be called the E400 Cabriolet.
All-wheel drive (4Matic is the company’s proprietary moniker) joins the options list for the first time; rear-wheel drive is the default setup. An air suspension is also available –this has proven a great addition to the C-Class counterpart, so it’s worth budgeting for in this car. Other useful extras include heat-reflecting leather upholstery, a “smart” wiper system that controls the amount of washer fluid applied to the windshield (an important consideration when the top is down), and Airscarf, which directs warm air to the front occupants’ necks through vents in the seats.
The powered multilayered fabric roof performs its up/down act in 20 seconds and at speeds of up to 30 mph. The cabin houses a relatively large 12.3-in display as standard. And by virtue of being a new E-Class, there are many driver aids available, such as autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian detection
To be announced. The outgoing E400 cabriolet starts at around $63,500
