2018 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo, Turbo S E-Hybrid; 911 GT3, GTS: New York Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2018 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is one of four North American debuts the company is making at the 2017 New York show.

The Sport Turismo version takes the regular Panamera luxury car (which is technically a hatchback) and adds a wagon-like tail to increase cargo space behind the rear seats from 17.4 cu ft. to 18.4.

It will come as the 4, an all-wheel-drive version with a 330-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6; the 4S, which has a twin-turbo 2.8-liter V6 making 440 hp; the 4 E-Hybrid, linking the 4S engine to a 136-hp electric motor, and a Turbo model with 550 hp from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8.

The 2018 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is a brand-new variant of the second-generation Panamera (which debuted for 2017). It’s kind of epic, with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 and an electric motor producing a combined output of 680 hp and 626 lb-ft of torque. That makes it the most powerful Panamera to date, with sports-car acceleration — requiring just 3.2 seconds to sprint from standstill to 60 mph. Porsche will also offer a long-wheelbase Executive version, which is only a tenth of a second slower. Both cars have a top speed of 192 mph. The lithium-ion battery can recharge in 3 hours with a 240-volt fast charger, and the car has an electric-only range of more than 20 miles.

Take the high-revving, naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat 6-cylinder engine that Porsche uses in its racing cars, tune it to develop 500 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, drop it into a lightweight 911 body, install a track-worthy suspension and offer a 6-speed manual transmission — that’s how to make the 2018 Porsche 911 GT3. It races from stationary to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and maxes out at 197 mph. The GT3 is hard-core.

On a slightly more civilized note, the new 2018 GTS versions of the 911 come with more standard equipment (such as Porsche Active Suspension Management) than their regular Carrera and Targa counterparts, along with a boost in power to 450 hp. There are GTS iterations of the coupe and convertible — with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive — and an all-wheel-drive version of the Targa (semi-convertible).

How Much?

The 2018 Porsche Panamera 4 Sport Turismo starts at $97,250.

The 2018 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid starts at $185,450. The Executive version is priced from $195,850.

The 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 starts at $144,650.

And the 2018 Porsche 911 GTS range starts at $121,750.

When Can You Get It?

The 911 GTS models are available now. The 911 GT3 arrives in the fall, and all the Panamera versions are due around the end of 2017.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

The Panamera is a luxury car with amazing driving talents, while the Sport Turismo adds some extra practicality. The 911 GTS range brings several features into one package that would cost more if they were ordered separately, plus more power. And the 911 GT3 is straight-ahead awesome.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Tesla Model S — As an alternative to the Panamera, hybrid or otherwise, the Model S offers speed, style and technology with no emissions.

2017 BMW 740e xDrive – A plug-in hybrid version of BMW’s excellent luxury sedan. Not as mightily powerful as Porsche’s finest, but still great to drive and well-appointed.

2017 Audi R8 — This midengine supercar is a natural rival to the 911. Now in its second generation.

2017 Mercedes-AMG GT — Kind of surprising that Mercedes-Benz hasn’t made a 911 rival until now. It’s been worth the wait.
